Monarch Of The Glen, Oil On Canvas By Robert Cleminson

Sold

Scottish Highland Oil On Canvas by Robert Cleminson.
A very nice painting of a magnificent 12 point stag, known as the 'Monarch of the Glen'. The oil painting is on canvas and in an ornate gilt frame. The scene is of an highland landscape of hills and stormy skies in an isolated wilderness with a proud 'Royal Stag' in the foreground. It is at the moment in need of a clean and a little restoration. Signed by the artist, R. Cleminson in the bottom left hand corner.
There is one small tear to the canvas.

Sir Edwin Landseer painted the original 'Monarch of the Glen' in 1851. It was commissioned as part of a series of three panels to hang in the Palace of Westminster in London and it thought to be one of the most popular paintings reproduced throughout the 19th century. In 2017 the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh launched a successful campaign to buy the painting, finally achieving the acquisition for £4 million. The painting is now part of the collection and is on display at the Scottish National Gallery.
