Pen & Ink Portrait Of A Young Archer.
Finely executed portrait of a young boy dressed as an archer, Seth William Stevenson. The pen, ink, pencil and wash on paper portrait is set with-in a triple mount and framed in gilt frame with glazing. Seth is shown in three-quarter length, standing in a confident pose. He wears a brown, fitted jacket with black buttons over a ruffled white collar and a dark tie. His white trousers are high-waisted, typical of early 19th-century children's dress. His hands are gloved with his right hand holding a longbow, a quiver of arrows at his side secured at his waist on a belt. The picture is of a very high standard with care taken in representing authentic archery equipment. The background is minimal and softly detailed - the faint outlines of trees suggest an outdoor setting, possibly a garden or park. A light stone structure appears on the left with a small inscription on the wall "HB Love 1828".
This is a charming and genteel scene that reflects both childhood innocence and social standing. The focus on archery attire, formal pose, and elegant rendering, all point to the boy being from an upper-class family.

Frame size 45½ cm high by 38 cm wide.

Horace Beevor Love (1800-1838) was a Norwich portrait painter and miniaturist in watercolour and oil. Love's career was cut short due to his early death, so his body of work is relatively small but highly appreciated amongst collectors.
