Welsh Football Union 1901-02 Season Ticket.
A rare Welsh Football Union season ticket in the form of a brown simulated Crocodile leather wallet, formerly belonging to Gavin (G.) Henry, Vice-President of the Welsh Rugby Union and Chairman of Llanelli RFC.
The wallet is in very good condition, with metal frame, light internal staining consistent with age and use. The front is gilt-embossed with: "Welsh Football Union, with the Prince of Wales's Feathers, 1901-1902, G. Henry, Vice-President
Admit to all matches under control of the Welsh Football Union." The final image shows another wallet and a lapel badge which are available separately on our website. All items originally belonged to G. Henry, Vice-President of the Welsh Rugby Union, and were kept together as part of his personal collection.
Contemporary reference - Welsh Mail, 19 August 1904:
A meeting of the General Committee of the Welsh Rugby Union was held at the Queen's Hotel, Cardiff, with Mr Horace Lyne in the chair. The business was largely formal, with Mr Lyne re-elected Chairman of Committee. The following were appointed to the Finance Committee: W. D. Phillips, Gavin Henry, Ack Llewellyn, J. Games, W. M. Douglas and T. D. Schofield.
At the meeting, Gavin Henry was appointed Vice-President of the Union, replacing Mr W. W. Wilkins, who had resigned at the previous annual meeting.
A contemporary anecdote:
Following a Wales v Scotland match, Arthur Gould, Wales captain, was heard enthusiastically proclaiming "Cymru am byth!"-before admitting, "I don't know what it means, but I've been told to say it." Amusement followed until Gavin Henry, described as "a Scotsman of the Llanelli club," came to his aid, explaining that it meant "Wales forever," and wryly noting that it was rather fitting for a Scotsman to teach a Welshman his own language on such an occasion.
