Scare-Head Long Nose Driver by Tom Dunn
An elegant and early scare-headed (or "scare joint") long nose driver by Tom Dunn, who worked in Wimbledon from 1870 and later at North Berwick from 1881. The stained and polished beechwood head is in fine original condition and displays a wonderfully graceful, traditional long nose shape. The club features a rear lead weight and the customary horn slip along the leading edge of the sole, while the crown is clearly stamped with the maker's mark, 'T. Dunn'.
The original hickory shaft remains fitted with its sheepskin leather grip, making this a particularly attractive and authentic example of an early hand-crafted golf club.

Approximate head dimensions:
a = 9 cm
b = 3 cm
c = 4.9 cm
(The measurements shown are the length of the whole club, the width of the face and depth of the head.)

Tom Dunn, son of Willie Dunn Sr. and brother of Willie Dunn Jr., belonged to one of golf's great dynastic families. He was not only a respected golfer and club maker, but also a prolific golf course architect, credited with laying out some 137 courses, particularly around London. Dunn also recorded four top-10 finishes in The Open Championship.

Early clubs such as this were characterised by their long, slender, shallow-faced heads and were crafted with ash or hickory shafts attached by means of a splice, or "scare joint." This traditional construction method involved overlapping the shaft and head diagonally, securing them with glue, and reinforcing the join with tightly wound pitched thread whipping. Each club was individually handmade, reflecting the exceptional craftsmanship of the period.
