Stop Um, Golf Club Deep Groove Jigger
Stop Um, Golf Club Deep Groove Jigger
Halley & Co. Hickory Backspin Pitcher Golf Club.
A fine example of a vintage hickory-shafted pitcher golf club. The back of the club head is stamped "Warranted Hand Forged, Pitcher", along with the distinctive crossed swords cleek mark of James B. Halley & Co. The club face features five deep slotted grooves, indicative of its backspin-focused design. Fitted with a hickory shaft and a later replacement suede leather grip, this club represents a classic piece of early golf craftsmanship.
The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face.
Standard backspin irons come in two styles: slotted or corrugated. The slotted grooves are cut straight down, at a 90 degree angle, into the face, where as with the corrugated grooves the sides of the grooves round inward towards the bottom and therefore do not have sharp edges. When the deep-grooved irons made their debut in 1913 they brought controversy with them. Many claimed that the excessive backspin produced by the grooves was making the game too easy. The R & A banned such clubs after Jock Hutchison made effective use of one on his way to winning the 1921 British Open, but the USGA did not outlaw them until January 1st, 1924.
