Hickory Shafted Golf Club, St Andrews
Hickory Shafted Golf Club, St Andrews
Scared Head O.K. Special, R.B. Wilson Driver.
An elegant persimmon wood scare-headed (or "scare joint") driver golf club by Robert Black Wilson of St Andrews. The club retains its original hickory shaft and full-length grip, while the head features a rear lead weight and the traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole. The polished, stained head is stamped on the crown: 'O.K. Special, R.B. Wilson, St Andrews, Made in Scotland'. This is an attractive example of a late 19th-century scare-head driver, presented in fair condition.
Robert Black Wilson was apprenticed under Old Tom Morris at St Andrews. Old Tom Morris was one of the great pioneers of golf during the 19th century - a multiple winner of The Open Championship, as well as a renowned club maker, greenkeeper, and golf course designer. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of golf.

Early clubs such as this were crafted with ash or hickory shafts attached to the head using a splice, or "scare joint." This traditional construction method involved overlapping the shaft and head diagonally, securing them with glue, and reinforcing the join with tightly wound pitched thread whipping. Each club was individually handmade, reflecting the exceptional craftsmanship of the period.
