4½" Brass & Bakelite Salmon Fly Reel by Carter & Sons, London.
A scarce early 4½ inch brass and Bakelite six-pillar centrepin salmon fly reel by Carter & Sons, London. Beautifully made, the reel features a revolving brass faceplate with a single tapered cow horn handle, combining traditional craftsmanship with the innovative use of early Bakelite.
The brass faceplate is clearly stamped 'Carter & Sons, Makers, London' and is set within a Bakelite surround, while the backplate is manufactured entirely from Bakelite with a silvered outer rim. The reel retains an attractive original patina throughout, reflecting its age and careful use, and remains a fine, honest example of this distinctive early pattern.
An increasingly difficult reel to find, it represents an interesting period in the development of British fishing tackle, when traditional brass construction was combined with one of the first modern synthetic materials.
Dimensions: The stated reel depth excludes the handle, which projects approximately 2½ cm beyond the faceplate.
