Antique Black Forest Bookends With Carved Saint Bernard Dogs.
Victorian extending Black Forest
Bavarian book slide. The book rack with carved St. Bernard dogs with the iconic barrel that the dogs are so famous for on each end. Both ends slide open to accommodate a varying number of books, and will fold flat when not in use. The adjustable bookends extend from 36 cm to 53 cm. This wonderful piece is most probably carved from Limewood (Lindenwood) but looks very similar to walnut and is with great colouring and patina.

St. Bernard is a breed of very large working dog from the Western Alps in Italy and Switzerland. They were originally bred for rescue work by the hospice of the Great St Bernard Pass on the Italian-Swiss border.
