Wooden Fishtail Lawn Tennis Racket.
A nice unnamed wooden lawn tennis racket with a fishtail handle. The racket in good clean condition, original stringing with red trebling, one vertical string broken and a few loose at the bottom, but nevertheless a very good example of a fishtail lawn tennis racket. The ash frame is straight and with an unmarked walnut convex wedge, handle stamped 13 OZ ¾ and with nice crisp edges.
The fishtail (fish tail) was an innovation in the Victorian period and was an attractive gimmick to help tennis players to grip their rackets. They were manufactured approximately from the 1890's to the 1920's and their shapely handle is always an attraction to the collector.
