Vintage Motoring Crash Helmet, D Lewis Ltd.
A fine light weight crash helmet which is made up of strips of linen soaked in shellac (to harden), ironed to the helmet form and then built up in layers to create an extremely hard shell. The helmet has a small peak to the front, is fitted with a leather headband and has webbed straps keeping a space between the head and outer case of the helmet. Strong leather neck and ear flaps are also fitted as is a chin strap. Inside the helmet is a D Lewis Ltd. cloth trade label reading 'D Lewis Ltd. Motor & Aviation Equipment, 124 Great Portland St., Oxford St. W.1.'.

D. Lewis was originally a gentleman's outfitters in the 1890's. They started to make and supply clothing for the aviation and motoring enthusiasts in the 1910's and in 1929 they became a limited company.
