Hendry & Bishop "STOPUM" Backspin Mashie Niblick
A good example of a 'corrugated' backspin golf club. This Mashie Niblick (sand wedge) was made by Hendry & Bishop, Edinburgh and Leith, and retailed by Ben sayers. The club with hickory shaft and polished grip. The rear of the club head stamped with the 'Mitre Brand' cleek mark of Hendry & Bishop and 'The "STOPUM" Mashie Niblick, Ben sayers, Hendry & Bishop, Edinburgh, Rd. In Britain & U.S.A., hand Forged In Scotland'.

The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face.

Standard backspin irons come in two styles: slotted or corrugated. The slotted grooves are cut straight down, at a 90 degree angle, into the face, where as with the corrugated grooves the sides of the grooves round inward towards the bottom and therefore do not have sharp edges. When the deep-grooved irons made their debut in 1913 they brought controversy with them. Many claimed that the excessive backspin produced by the grooves was making the game too easy. The R & A banned such clubs after Jock Hutchison made effective use of one on his way to winning the 1921 British Open, but the USGA did not outlaw them until January 1st, 1924.
