Forgan & Son Smooth Face Rut Niblick Hickory Golf Club
Forgan & Son Smooth Face Rut Niblick Hickory Golf Club
Forgan & Son St Andrews, Rut Niblick.
This early Forgan & Son hickory shafted rut niblick has a smooth face, original hickory shaft and sheep skin grip. This is a fine example of a smooth face golf club, the rear of the head stamped 'R. Forgan & Son, St Andrews' with the 'King's Crown' cleek mark. Hickory shaft also with Forgan stamp.
The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face.
Robert Forgan became clubmaker to HRH Prince of Wales in 1863 and used the prince's plume of three feathers as his mark until 1901, when upon the Prince became King Edward his mark changed to the 'King's Crown'.
Some people categorise these types of clubs as track or rut irons, but by the late 1880's track or rut irons were being replaced by a lighter and more refined iron. These clubs were different as the head was slightly larger, the blade was not as thick and they had a shorter hosel. This type of club is now commonly referred to as a 'rut niblick'.
