A cast iron decorative centerpiece for a hearth, antique fire basket with brass ball finial dog grates and decorated back piece with a central sun motif. This fire basket, also known as a dog grate, with a great pair of matching brass fire dogs.
Fire baskets and fire dogs were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries as both a source of heat and a decorative centrepiece for a fireplace. The basket grate is a cast-iron container that holds the logs or coal for burning.
