Wiltshaw & Robinson Carlton Ware Ceramic Curling Stone Jar
A rare and highly collectible Carlton Ware ceramic curling stone jar, produced by Wiltshaw & Robinson of Stoke-on-Trent. This charming novelty piece was originally intended as a tobacco or biscuit jar. The main body is modelled in the form of a granite curling stone, complete with a plated hinged lid stamped with Design Registration No. 246614, dating the design to 1895. The lid is topped with a traditional curling stone handle which, when turned, opens the jar. The piece displays excellent attention to detail and exemplifies Carlton Ware's late Victorian novelty production. The base is clearly stamped "Carlton Ware" along with "W & R" (Wiltshaw & Robinson), the W & R crown mark, Stoke-on-Trent.
A scarce and desirable example of late 19th-century British ceramic novelty ware.
