A handsome example of mid-century Swiss chronograph design, this 1950s Gallet two-register wrist chronograph combines a compact 35mm case with the highly regarded hand-wound Venus Calibre 188 movement.
Gallet & Co. of La Chaux-de-Fonds has a long history of producing precision timing instruments for military, aviation and sporting applications. This post-war chronograph reflects that practical heritage, with a highly legible dial, robust two-register layout and distinctive angular case design.
The watch retains its original silver-white dial, now showing a warm, naturally developed patina. Crisp Arabic numerals, aged luminous paint and classic syringe hands give the dial an unmistakably vintage character. At 9 o'clock, the small seconds register is balanced by the 30-minute chronograph recorder at 3 o'clock, while the outer telemeter/tachymeter scale adds to the watch's period functionality.
Inside is the Swiss-made, 17-jewel Venus Calibre 188, a manual-winding movement operating at 18,000 vibrations per hour. The movement has been fully serviced and overhauled, with smooth winding and crisp chronograph start, stop and reset functions.
The 35mm chrome-plated base-metal case measures approximately 36.8mm across including the crown and pushers, with a 43.5mm lug-to-lug length and 12.5mm thickness including the acrylic crystal. Its sharp angular lugs, twin pump pushers and stainless-steel screw-down case back capture the distinctive proportions of the period.
The case shows light surface wear and tarnishing consistent with its age, while the original dial's patina gives the watch an authentic, lived-in vintage appearance. It is paired with a tan ostrich leather strap and stainless-steel pin buckle.
