The compass has a brass body and lid with original black finish, the glass lid having a sighting hairline and the lid lifting tab with aiming notch. There is a prism which allows you to read the bearing on the free spinning dial. The compass fitted with a bezel-tightening knob and thumb/lanyard ring. The original red rubber friction ring on the base is perished, the base being stamped 'Short & Mason Ltd. London, No. 1310, 1906, D.HILL' a broad arrow (crows foot), indicating that it was Government Army Issue.
There are general signs of use, some wear to the original finish.
