Famous Cricketers and Cricket Grounds 1895.
Large late Victorian first edition cricket book "Famous Cricketers and Cricket Grounds 1895" edited by C.W. Alcock and published by Hudson & Kearns and 'News of the World', London. The unpaginated book with faded gilt edge pages, green cloth covering with gilt title to front cover with a gilt image of a cricketer (W.G. Grace) in front of the stumps. The cover rather worn, some pages lose. Throughout the book there are large format full-page photographs of cricketers (majority by E. Hawkins & Co., Brighton) with facsimile signatures and descriptive captions. The last photo is of the books editor ,C.W. Alcock, himself a fair cricketer and footballer in his school days at Harrow. He had over twenty-five years' service in football as the Secretary of the Football Association, and only a little less as Secretary of the Surrey County Cricket Club. He took a leading roll in the formation of the code of rules which resulted ultimately in what is known as the Association game.
Front page with text 'Famous Cricketers and Cricket Grounds 1895, edited by C.W. Alcock, London, Published by Hudson & Kearns, 83 - 87, Southwark Street, S.E. and 'News of the World', 9 & 10 Whitefriars Street, E.C'. There is an alphabetical index listing all 285 photographs. There is a small trade label inside 'Brentano's, Booksellers & Stationers, 37 Avenue de L'Opéra, Paris'.

Team photos of Surrey, Gentlemen 1894, Players 1894, Kent, Lancashire, Gloucestershire, Somerset , 1891-2 Lord Sheffield's Australian Team, The Australians 1893 "Eighth Team", Sussex, Yorkshire, Middlesex, Leicestershire County, Nottingham, Warwickshire County, Cambridge University, Oxford University, Gentlemen 1895, Players 1895, Essex, Hampshire & Derby. A photograph of Lord's Cricket Ground - Eton & Harrow match 12th July 1895. Photos of the following cricket grounds:- Sussex County Ground (Hove), Somerset County Ground (Taunton), Old Trafford Ground (Manchester), Cambridge University Cricket Ground, Oxford University Cricket Ground, Canterbury Cricket Ground, The Oval Cricket Ground, Lords cricket Ground, Warwickshire County Ground (Edgbaston). There are also images of Surrey Cricket ground (1848), The Cricket Match between Sussex and Kent at Brighton & Old Lillywhite.
