Vintage Herbert Johnson Motor Racing Helmet.
A post-war motor racing helmet made by Herbert Johnson. The helmet has a cork interior, fitted with a leather headband with linen neck and ear protectors and a chin strap, all with leather strapping. The helmet is made of a lightweight shellac construction with moulded peak and fitted with a removable leather & celluloid wraparound visor. At the rear of the helmet is a leather loop to fit a goggle strap and inside there is a Herbert Johnson cloth trade label, Herbert Johnson (Bond Street) Ltd., 38 New Bond St, London, W. By Appointment Hatters To The Late King George VI'. The helmet is painted dark green (British Racing Green) but showing some age-wear commensurate with an active racing career. Comes in the original cardboard Herbert Johnson hat box. A very good helmet in used, but excellent condition with approximately 56 cm internal circumference.

This is an excellent piece of British motoring history in lovely condition. A fantastic piece of autombilia.

Herbert Johnson helmets were very popular with the racing fraternity as they could easily be accessorised with a chin strap or wraparound visor. The penultimate image shows an advert for Herbert Johnson whilst the last image shows Phil Hill wearing a similar helmet during his victory at the 1958 24 Hours of Le Mans.
