Large Golf Professionals Ball Marker.
Rare Chambers Patent "Omnes Golf Ball Marker" press. The press would most likely have been secured to the golf professional bench, as it is a good heavy duty ball marking press. It is thought that the press was used to mark the golf balls of the club members with an assigned registered number, so if a lost ball was found it could be handed into the pro and handed back to the appropriate member. It looks like the club could also have had a stamp made with the club crest which could also have been stamped onto the ball. A great functional working piece, ideal as a display piece.

The press is stamped to the very top of the machine 'Made In England 2832', just above the clock face 'Chambers Patent no 18712-10'. The clock face shows what will be impressed into the ball - BADGE, the alphabet and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9'. There are also the remains of a decal on the bottom half of the face 'Sole Makers, The "Omnes" Marker Co., 50 Dale End, Birmingham'.

To mark a ball, first a ball is placed into the cup at the bottom. The selector knob is pushed and turned to the required letter or number. The sprung handle is pushed down to imprint the selected character onto the surface of the ball. The ball can then be rotated ready for the next character, the cup has small slots on the edge so each rotation lines up perfectly. The arrow on the clock face is then turned to the next character ready for another go. Each turn will ink the characters.
A great piece of golfing history.
