Rare Sir Walter Dalrymple Duplex "Hammer" Golf Club
Rare Sir Walter Dalrymple Duplex "Hammer" Golf Club
Mallet Head Golf Club by Sir Walter Dalrymple.
Duplex 'Hammer' golf club, Mashie and a Putter, by Sir Walter Dalrymple (the Baronet of North Berwick). The double faced hammer headed club stamped No.18 with the mashie face being dished and textured, the putter face smooth. The whole club head is cast in brass with the hickory shaft, with suede grip, passing through the center of the head and being secured with a wooden wedge. There is a wooden dowel running horizontally through the head, with the head stamped 'Hutchison N.Berwick' on one side and 'Sir W.H. Dalrymple's Patent' on the other. Dalrymple received a British patent (No. 16,148) dated September 9th, 1892 for his hammer club, although it was very short lived. To find an example where very few are known to exist is extremely difficult, therefore making this a highly sort after collectible.
Dalrymple's patent describes three different models of his duplex club. Each club had two different faces, a driver and a brassie, an iron and a "bleek" and thirdly a mashie and a putter. A "bleek" possibly being Dalrymple's own term for a cleek. Bennett Lang was the craftsman employed by Dalrymple to make his clubs, but the work was carried out at the establishment of Jamie Hutchison.
