A good example of the very popular aluminium Braid Mills Cleek by the Standard Golf Co. The crown stamped 'STANDARD GOLF Co., MILLS, 98687, PATENT, SUNDERLAND'. The base stamped 'The "MILLS", Cleek, MSD1 Model, Standard Lie, 7 ozs 15 drs'. The club is in excellent original condition with hickory shaft and suede leather grip, grip with remains of a rubber grip. The top of the original hickory shaft has been stamped 'W.J. Rush, Special, Cromer.'. Rush became the professional at Royal Cromer from 1906 until the end of the 30's, prior to this he was Willie Aveston assistant, also at Cromer.
Founded in 1888 Royal Cromer Golf Club immediately attained royal status through the Prince of Wales' patronage, later to become King Edward VII. The original course was only 9 holes and was on rented land from the Suffield family. Old Tom Morris was invited in 1891 to advise the club on changes to make the club the finest of its kind and pave the way for a later 18 hole course.
