Vintage Mahjong Set in Hardwood Carry Case.
A beautifully presented vintage Mahjong set housed in an elegant hardwood carry case with twin brass carrying handles and decorative brass corner mounts. The case features five fitted trays: four contain the complete set of 144 hand-painted tiles with traditional bamboo backs, while the fifth, lower drawer stores four plain tiles, four wind discs, and a selection of original scoring sticks.
The set is complete, with one replacement tile included. It is an excellent colour and pattern match to the originals, differing only in that it is very slightly thinner.
Mahjong enjoyed enormous popularity as an after-dinner pastime during the years between the First and Second World Wars, and this timeless game has once again found favour with collectors, enthusiasts, and families alike.
A game for four players, Mahjong combines skill, strategy, calculation, and an element of luck. The objective is to complete winning combinations, or melds, while carefully observing your opponents and judging how close they are to victory. Much like poker, success often depends on knowing when to play aggressively and when to adopt a more defensive approach.
Played with beautifully engraved tiles featuring Chinese characters, bamboo, and circle (dot) suits, Mahjong has evolved into many regional variations. While the rules and scoring systems differ around the world, the core components of the game remain remarkably consistent. A traditional Mahjong set typically includes 144 tiles, a pair of dice, scoring sticks, and eight bonus tiles. Many sets, including this one, also have the numbers 1-9 printed on the suit tiles to make identifying their values easier.
