Pair of English Ash Boomerangs.
A fine pair of ash boomerangs by Buchanan Ltd., London. Both boomerangs come in a pine press to help stop them from warping, the press stamped 'Buchanan Ltd., Pall Mall, London' with a registration number of 491070. The two boomerangs have the same registration number of 487623, but then have a four digit number, one is 1001 and the other is 1103. The registration numbers both date to 1906. The 1001 boomerang has the remains of a Buchanan Ltd. paper trade label on the reverse. The two ends differ on the boomerangs, presumably to indicate the end to hold when throwing. The cross-section shape of the boomerang has a top surface slightly convex while the underside is nearly flat, this works very much like a plane wing and helps it to fly. These are European boomerangs as opposed to Aboriginal ones and would have been made for sport.

Buchanan & Co. Ltd were sporting goods makers and retailers that enjoyed success through the second half of the 19th into the early 20th century. The business was formed by James Buchanan who started by making archery equipment and is recognised as one of the four best bow-makers of the period.
