Travelling Folding Thornhill Desk.
An Victorian folding mahogany portable writing desk by W. Thornhill & Co, 144 New Bond Street, London. The top is hinged to the centre to enable it to fold up and the base is an X-frame, very similar to a coaching table or campaign table. The entire desk folds down to a tight compact unit and locks tight, is made of solid wood to withstand stress and use. There is a mahogany slide that clips in place when the table is open to stop it collapsing. The desk with brass fittings, rectangular top opening to present a writing suite in red leather with built-in photo frame, bone letter opener, blotting paper, ink well, vesta box, stationery compartments and pen sleeves. The red leather embossed in gilt 'W.Thornhill & Co., 144 New Bond Street, London'.

Size shown is when closed, open it measures 93 cm high, 61 cm wide and 66 cm deep.

There is a faint ink stamp on the underside of one of the pieces '??retze? & Son, cabinet manufacturer, 26 March 1900, Manchester, Nottingham, London'. A piece of superior craftsmanship most probably made by the above cabinet makers for W. Thornhill.
