Vintage Hardy's Trout Fishing Priest
Vintage Hardy's Trout Fishing Priest
Trout Fishing Priest.
A Hardy's of Alnwick trout fishing priest elegantly designed, well weighted and beautifully finished. This priest has a hardwood handle with lanyard and a 6 ½ cm polished brass head. The weighted head is engraved 'Made by Hardy's England'.
The last image showing is a 1930's Hardy's Anglers' Guide catalogue entry for the 'Priests'. A trout priest costing 3/6 each.
A 'priest' is a blunt ended baton used by Anglers to quickly kill fish. Known as poachers, game warden's or angler's 'priest' or even 'persuader'. The name "priest" is thought to derive from the notion of administering the "last rites" to the fish.
