Badminton Library Book, Deluxe Double Volume Fishing.
A fantastic first edition Deluxe double volume 'Badminton Library of Sports and Pastimes' book - Fishing - Salmon & Trout - Pike & Other Course Fish, edited by His Grace The Duke of Beaufort. Published in 1886 by Longmans, Green, & Co. and printed by Spottiswoode and Co.,New-Street Square, London. Deluxe hardback binding with original blue half morocco, spine lettered in gilt, gilt family coat of arms of The Duke of Beaufort over orange cloth, blue endpapers and blue silk bookmarker. The book with wonderful illustrations throughout, frontispiece and title page vignette with tissue guard. The Badminton Library, originally published between 1885 and 1896, was a sporting and publishing project conceived and founded by Henry Somerset 8th Duke of Beaufort. It developed into a series of sporting books which aimed to cover all major sports and pastimes, with each volume written by experts who were authorities in their fields. The book titles being - Hunting, Fishing, Racing, Riding & Driving, Shooting, Fencing, Boating, Cycling, Cricket, Yachting, Tennis - Lawn Tennis - Racquets & Fives, Golf - Curling & Skating, Football & other school games.

There are no ownership marks and internally clean and bright save for minor foxing to the first few pages, front and back.

The Duke of Beaufort's family coat of arms has the Latin motto 'Mutare vel timere sperno' - I scorn to change or to fear. The crest consists 1st and 4th quarterly Fleurs-de-lis, 2nd and 3rd three Lions surmounted by a crown and Portcullis. Supporters of the crest are a chained spotted panther with flames coming from his mouth and ears on one side and a winged dragon on the other holding in his mouth a hand.

The price is for the double volume on 'Fishing'. The other Badminton Library books are sold separately, as are the bookends.
