Original English Tavern Pub Sign, Merry Cricketers.
Vintage pub sign, a nicely distressed double-sided hand-painted wooden public house sign, Merry Cricketers. All in original condition with no restoration, some of the paint work is flaking but this adds to the charm of this quintessential English pub sign. The pub signage has a metal surround with two eyelets so that both sides of the sign could be seen when it was originally hung outside the pub. This could be hung as picture or as originally intended, would make a great sign in your man cave or home bar. The scene depicted is of three cricketers fighting over the wooden stumps at the end of a game of cricket, very reminiscent of the village cricket clubs on a Sunday afternoon.
The only mention of 'Merry Cricketers' pub that we can find was situated at 276 Lower Road Rotherhithe, London, SE16, at the junction with Bestwood Street. It was first recorded as a Public House in 1870 and believed to have ceased trading in the early 1990's.
A great piece of tavern history.
