John Smart was a Scottish painter of landscapes, painting in both oils and watercolour, his speciality being Highland scenes which very often included sporting subjects. Born in Leith in 1838, son of an engraver Robert Campbell Smart. Educated at the High School in Leith and with the intention of becoming an engraver like his father he studied art at the School of Manufacturers. However, showing a talent for landscape painting, he instead enrolled to study landscape painting under Horatio McCulloch, R.S.A. Smart was one of the founder members of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, elected ARSA in 8 November 1871, becoming a full member of RSA in 10 February 1877.
