John Gray

1824 - 1904

John Gray was one of the earliest known cleekmarkers to stamp his name on the rear of a club head and was based in Prestwick, Scotland, around 1850. He started in business as first a blacksmith but later concentrated his efforts as a cleek maker. When Tom Morris came to Prestwick, as the greenkeeper in 1851, both Morris and Gray became founding members of the Prestwick Mechanics Golf Club, renamed the Prestwick St. Nicholas Golf Club in 1858. Gray married the daughter of Charles Hunter, he took over from Morris as the greenkeeper, and he continued to make irons until he retired in approximately 1890.
