Army and Navy Lawn Tennis Box.
A very rare 'Army & Navy Lawn Tennis' box. The polished pine equipment box, now empty, is painted with coloured stripes on the outside of the box, the interior of the lid having three lithograph labels applied to it. The central label has the title on it and showing a game of tennis taking place. The left hand label has a diagram showing the construction of the court according to the rules issued and authorized by the 'Marylebone Cricket Club, and The All England, Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club. 1878'. The right hand label has the printed rules and the original contents of the box when first sold. The contents label reads 'This set contains} 4 Best Lawn Tennis Bats, Press to hold the Bats. 6 Covered & 12 Plain India Rubber balls, Poles Jointed Brass Feruled &c. (Polished or Painted), Superior Tanned Net, with Mallet Drill Runners Pegs &c. &c.' There are three holes in the bottom of the box so the three bolts of the tennis press could sit without taking up to much space. A very nice piece of Lawn Tennis history.
