Vintage Shooting Place Finder, Butt Marker.
A well crafted and engineered silver plated shooting field place finder or butt marker. The case is very similar to a vesta case but when the top is slid back the interior pops up to reveal 8 removable numbered pegs. The pegs are made of bone and are numbered 1 to 8. The top is inscribed with the previous owners initials.
The numbered pegs are randomly inserted into the cartridge, number side down. Each shooter then takes their turn to draw a peg and the revealed number shows the actual shooting position (butt) that they will use for the first drive. Place finders were very popular from the 1900's and are making a resurgence today, with many shooters looking out for good antique examples.
