Antique Golf Club, Scared Head Wood
Antique Golf Club, Scared Head Wood
Antique Golf Club - Scared Head Wood by D.M. Patrick
An elegant persimmon wood scared-head (or "scare-joint") driver by D.M. Patrick. This fine club features a lead weight set into the rear of the head and the traditional horn slip along the leading edge of the sole. The polished, light-stained head is stamped "D.M. Patrick", while the original hickory shaft is also stamped with Patrick's name just below the sheepskin leather grip, further enhancing its authenticity and period character.
Presented in good condition, this is an excellent example of an early 20th-century scared-head golf club, reflecting the quality craftsmanship and materials of the era. The measurements shown represent the overall length of the club, together with the width and depth of the head.
Approximate head size:-
a = 8½ cm
b = 3½ cm
c = 6 cm
Early golf clubs such as this were constructed with an ash or hickory shaft joined to the head by means of a splice, commonly known as a scare joint. This traditional method involved overlapping the shaft and head diagonally, securing the joint with glue, and reinforcing it with tightly wound, pitch-coated thread whipping.
Beautifully handmade by the skilled craftsmen of the period, clubs of this type represent an important stage in the development of golf club design and construction.
