Hardy Silex Major Fishing Reel, Hardy Broth. Alnwick.
Hardy Silex Major Fishing Reel, Hardy Broth. Alnwick.
Hardy Fishing Reel ' THE 'SILEX MAJOR'.
This reel retains the original colouring with some rubbing between the twin ivory handles. It also has a brass foot, sprung stud drum release catch, horizontal brake handle for single-handed casting, an audible wind-in check and a tension screw for the required brake pressure. The regulator knob for the brake pressure on this reel was in use from 1925 - 1927 inclusive. On the back plate is 'MADE BY HARDY BROS Ltd, ALNWICK, ENGLAND.' with 'THE "SILEX MAJOR" and the registered No.2206. 21131 & 4163. One of the images is a copy showing the entry for the "Hardex" in a Hardy's Anglers' Guide & Catalogue.
The Silex was patented at the end of 1896. It was with this reel, and the perfect, that helped Hardy's become one of the top manufacturers. Anglers readily went for the Silex over normal wooden starback reels because of the supreme casting performances it gave. The Silex was made from 1896 to 1911. The Silex No.2 was a natural progression and was made from 1911 until 1922. The Silex 'Major' was in Hardy's 1923 catalogue.
