Dr George Cumming's Family Portrait.
A good large and imposing oil painting by William Crawford, FRSA. A rare opportunity to acquire a period oil painting with strong cricket content and great provenance. The painting depicting "The Children of Dr Cumming" and previously unrecorded and now presented in fine condition with original maple frame. The four children in the picture are from left to right:-
Charles (1844-1912), Alexander (1839-1865), William (1842-1909) and George (1841-1926). The four children depicted in a landscape setting, Alexander holding a shot gun, George with cricket bat and ball.
Dr George Cumming (1802-1856) was one of six children of Robert Cumming of Logie, Morayshire, his four brothers all died on military service in India. George, in turn, had four sons, painted in this picture. The boys' grandmother was Robbie Burns' "Bonny Leslie", "the most beautiful, elegant woman in the world".
William Crawford (1825-1869) was an Edinburgh born portrait artist whose work was much admired and much in demand. He studied at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh where he was under Sir William Allan and then spent several years in Rome. On his return to Edinburgh he taught at the Trustees Academy and exhibited widely but especially at The Royal Scottish Academy, where he was elected a Fellow in 1862, and at The Royal Academy, where he exhibited 22 times.
