Eton Cricket Photograph R.A.H. Mitchell Esq. House Eleven 1898.
An evocative late-19th-century Eton cricket team photograph, formerly the property of Etonian G. Lee, whose name appears in pencil on the reverse of the mount board. The photograph remains in its original Hills & Saunders mount, featuring the characteristic arched window cutout and the Eton College crest (three silver lilies on black; a gold lion on red; and a fleur-de-lis on blue). It is presented in a glazed gilt frame (frame size 38 cm high by 45½ cm wide).
The college team photo dates from the same year in which four members of the House Eleven appeared at Lord's for the 1898 Eton v. Harrow match. Harrow won by nine wickets on that occasion, with E. M. Dowson captaining Harrow and H. C. Pilkington captaining Eton. The four players mentioned are all dressed in traditional cricket whites and caps, C. H. B. Marsham, H. C. Pilkington, Lord F. Scott and N. E. T. Bosanquet.
The names written along the lower edge of the mount-historically associated with the team-are:
G. Lee, C. F. M. Pik, R. C. Bonsor, H. Hulton-Harrop, R. Bonsor, C. H. B. Marsham, H. C. Pilkington, Lord F. Scott, N. E. T. Bosanquet, C. Hargreaves, and B. Hervey-Bathurst.
