French Billiard Lithograph, Debauchery.
Very rare billiard lithograph, 'Débauche' (Debauchery) by Jules David. Subtitle 'Laisse-moi donc!....j'veux l'tuer, c't'escroc là' (So leave me! .... I want to kill him, that crook there). This single lithograph was in Jules David's album entitled 'Vice and Virtue' which had a series of twelve lithographs, a good or bad action in each stage of life. Six plates were dedicated to vice and six to virtue. 'Débauche' shows two gentlemen having a disagreement, one holding a billiard cue the other a bottle. In the background can be seen some French soldiers trying to restore order. The main image is surrounded by several vignettes depicting what happens after the fight. The main character can be seen being surrounded by three soldiers, being led away in a cart and standing in a firing line. The extra publication details 'La bonne et la manvaise condute. Jean-Baptiste David (called Jules David; 1808-1892) was a French painter and lithographer. His illustrations appeared in many books and magazines.
