Pair Of Equestrian Hunting Prints By Cecil Aldin, The Huntsman and The Whip
Cecil Aldin Fox-Hunting Prints, The Huntsman and The Whip.
A handsome pair of large format vintage fox-hunting chromolithographs by the celebrated British sporting artist Cecil Aldin (1870-1935). The prints depict a mounted huntsman and his pack of hounds and are titled, The Huntsman and The Whip. Both prints are in good original condition, with strong colours, and are presented in substantial period oak frames. The scale of the prints is particularly impressive and makes them a striking pair when displayed together. The prints were published by Lawrence & Bullen, London, and the early large-format impressions of The Huntsman and The Whip are known to date from 1902. Specialist research published in 'Print Quarterly' records 1902 impressions of The Whip and The Huntsman and notes that these early Lawrence & Bullen editions were larger than the later 1907 versions issued by Lawrence & Jellicoe.
The reverse of each frame bears a period French framing label reading: L. Morenvillier, Doreur - Encadreur, 8 Rue Marie Stuart, 8, Paris.
This Parisian framer's label adds an interesting provenance detail and suggests that the prints were framed in France, probably relatively close to the time they were produced.
Condition:-
The original oak frames have been carefully cleaned, while the prints themselves have been left untouched, retaining their original surface and character. The prints have been trimmed along the black border and remain securely mounted to their original backboards, with the edges adhered in the traditional manner.
There are a couple of minor condition points consistent with the age and large format of these early prints. The Whip has a small tear to the lower right corner, while The Huntsman has a small tear running through the riding helmet. Neither detracts significantly from the overall appearance of the prints when framed and displayed.
The paper has some gentle undulation across the surface, which is not unusual with chromolithographs of this considerable size and is particularly noticeable only on close inspection. Overall, the prints retain good colour, attractive original surfaces and a pleasing period appearance, and the recently cleaned oak frames present them particularly well.
In short, these remain an attractive and authentic pair, with the minor imperfections one would expect from large early prints of this age.
