Tom Browne

1870 - 1910

Thomas (Tom) Arthur Browne was a British illustrator, often of sporting subjects, including golf. He was an extremely popular strip cartoonist, painter and illustrator of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods and a keen horseman like his contemporaries Phil May and Cecil Aldin. He was an apprentice to a lithographic printer and eked out a living with freelance cartoons for London comic papers. His popularity grew when he produced comic strips for the cheaply printed 'Comic Cuts', later moving to London and into a studio in Wollaton House at Westcombe Park. There he turned out six full-page strips a week and produced illustrations for several British magazines, his cartoons appearing in Punch, The Tatler and other highly rated periodicals of the day. But perhaps he is more famous for the strutting, monocled, top hat character he created in 1908 for the Johnny Walker Whisky Company. Browne also depicted 'Johnny Walker' playing a series of sports including golf, skating, curling, cricket, coaching and shooting.
