Ernest Greenwood

Ernest Greenwood (12 February 1913 - 17 May 2009) was an English artist who served as President of the Royal Watercolour Society from 1976 to 1984. Born in Welling, Kent, in 1913, Greenwood studied at the Gravesend School of Art before attending the Royal College of Art from 1931 to 1935. He later continued his artistic education in Rome, Paris, and Copenhagen, broadening both his skills and artistic perspective. During the Second World War, Greenwood was conscripted for military service. After the war, he began teaching art at Chislehurst Technical High School for Girls, where he was commissioned to create 15 murals on wooden panels depicting themes from Christmas and Easter. In 1953, Greenwood became an inspector of art education for the London County Council, a role he held until 1966 before taking up the same position with Kent Local Education Authority. He remained there until his retirement in 1973. That same year, Greenwood was invited to become President of the Royal Watercolour Society. During his eight-year tenure, he played a significant role in helping the society recover from a period of financial difficulty and strengthen its future. Throughout his career, Greenwood exhibited widely, with works shown at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute, the Royal British Academy, and numerous provincial galleries across Britain.
