Allen

1798 - 1913

J.W. Allen, established in London in 1798, was one of Britain's longest-standing makers of trunks, travel goods, and military outfitting equipment. Based mainly at 22 and 37 Strand, they became known for their high-quality campaign furniture, including portable armchairs, beds, and washstands, as well as a wide variety of leather travel goods-boasting over 500 items for domestic and continental use. Though little is known about their early years, by the 1820's they appeared in trade directories as "Allen, John, 22 Strand." Over time, they operated under both "J.W. Allen" and simply "Allen," a sign of their established reputation. Their excellence was recognized with prize medals and a royal appointment as Military Outfitters to the Prince of Wales. The Royal Coat of Arms above their shop underscored this prestige. The company continued trading into the early 20th century, with their last known listing appearing in 1913.
