Antique Mountaineering Porters Wooden Tea Chest & Ice Axe, John Baird Tyson, OBE

Sold

Kanjiroba Mountaineering Porters Tea Chest & Ice Axe, John B. Tyson.
The metal bound wooden chest has great mountaineering interest as it belonged to John B. Tyson, it is stenciled "22 Kanjiroba Himal (Bombay)". Most probably used on the second (1964) of his three exploratory mountaineering expeditions to the Kanjiroba region of west Nepal. There is an Austrian 'Stubai' ice axe and five original mountaineering photographs to accompany the chest which was used for transportation of possessions on the explorations. One of the photos shows the porters' crossing over the tumultuous waters of the river on temporary bridges made of ladders. The photo is 'one of the sixth crossing of the Langu Khola (the gorge of the Langu river east of Dalphu in Nepal) using 60ft of laddering brought in 5ft sections', you can clearly see the porters carrying the wooden tea chests. Another photograph clearly shows a porter with a chest strapped to his back also with the 'Kanjiroba Himal (Bombay)' stencil.

We also have an 'Himalaya - Pickel, Modell, Kuno Rainer' ice axe (28390) for sale that also belonged to John Tyson.
