Vintage Sommer's Spring Assisted Corkscrew.
A good example of a German spring-assisted corkscrew. This type of cork screw was designed by W. Sommer's with a registered design No.114369, dating from 1899. By incorporating a spring within the design it makes for easier extraction. There is a "paper clip" retainer that locks into a small hole in the shank. This keeps the pressure of the spring on the wine bottle to help with cork extraction.  Once the cork is removed from the bottle the paper clip is slid out of the shank, this then makes removing the cork from the worm much easier. The corkscrew has an ebonised turned wooden handle. A nice talking point when next de-corking a bottle of wine.
