Pair Of Bronze Lady's Hand Door Knockers.
A rare pair (left & right) of fantastic antique female hand door knockers cast in bronze. The lady's hands are expertly crafted and are holding a ball between the thumb and index finger, the back plates with decorative detailing. The pair of hands have been mounted onto a wooden board for display. The size shown is for the board, each hand measures 29cm long, protrudes 7cm and has a 22cm diameter back-plate.

A palm-shaped symbol depicting an open hand with five fingers has been a sign for protection throughout history. The lady's hand door knocker is thought to originate from the Hand of Fatima - a palm-shaped amulet used to protect against evil. The symbol of protection originates in Islam but has since been adopted by Judaism and Christianity to ward off evil forces. In Islamic communities it is known as the hand of Fatima Zahra, on Jewish homes the hand of Miriam, Levantine Christians know it as the hand of Mary. The hand-shaped knockers were common in countries bordering the Mediterranean where they then spread to neighbouring countries.
