Engraved Sunday Club, Golf Club Walking Stick

Engraved Sunday Club, Golf Club Walking Stick

Sold

Gentleman's Golf Walking Stick, Sunday Club.
An exquisite walking cane with the handle in the shape of a golf club head. The gentleman's walking cane has a plated head finely engraved with fine scroll leaf, whipping and of a horn insert with screws. There is a white metal band with engraving, a space to put your initials and the remains of a makers mark 'Ltd'. It has a leather wrist band with a combination of a hickory and bamboo shaft with original brass and steel ferrule. It is a nice good quality golfing walking stick made by a skilled craftsman.

The ban on golfing on the Sabbath, Sunday, had the effect of the club makers producing walking sticks for canny golfers. They fashioned the canes with a golf club head as a handle and they became known as 'Sunday Clubs' or 'Sabbath sticks'. It is said that on the Sabbath a Sunday Club owner, when nobody was looking, could still enjoy a crafty putt or swing.
