Vintage Bicycle Polo Mallet.
A good short polo mallet with cigar shaped head made from bamboo root and with a rattan shaft. It is in good condition with original handle. It could be a bicycle polo mallet or practice mallet. There is no visible makers name although Salter & Sons of Aldershot were the sole makers for Bicycle polo sticks as they very proudly announce on their advertisements. In the 1930's was the second creation of the Bicycle Polo Association of Great Britain and a set of new rules were written.

The sport of polo enjoyed much popularity amongst British Army officers, which explains why James Salter was based in Aldershot, home of the British Army. James already had a reputation for repairing polo mallets so in 1883 at 23 High Street, Aldershot, he opened his shop, it still bears the name J.Salter and Sons. He became famous throughout the world for his high quality goods, leading players would only use Salter equipment. The secret of his success was using only the best materials available and always trying to improve his products.
When James retired his sixth child, Sydney, took over the running of the business. The business continued to grow, as did the clientele. The list of Salter's customers was very impressive and they supplied equipment to high ranking military personnel, Dukes, Maharajas, Princes and Kings, all of it made in the Aldershot premises.
