Pair Of Antique Rowing Stevengraphs, Are you Ready & Final Spurt.
A very rare pair of late 19th century woven silk Stevengraphs of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race entitled Are you Ready & Final Spurt. The design was registered 8th January 1880 and depicts both Oxford and Cambridge boat crews in their rowing sculls on the river. The detailing is very good, you can see their faces, limbs of the crews are in pink, the Cambridge oars in pale blue and the Oxford oars in dark blue. In great original condition, mounts with titles and in original frames. The colours have not faded and are very vibrant. To keep the colours of the silk this way they should be stored away from sunlight as they are very light sensitive. Thomas Stevens was the sole inventor and manufacturer of the 'Stevengraph Pure Silk Woven Pictures'. The backboards with ink stamp 'John R. Fairgrieve, Bookseller & Stationer, 7 Cockburn Street, Edinburgh'.

The list of Stevengraphs printed on the original back of the picture are:
