Unusual Bicycle Polo Mallet, Aldershot.
A wonderful bicycle polo mallet, no makers name is visible but J. Salter & Sons of Aldershot announced on their advertisements that they were the 'sole makers for bicycle polo sticks' and that it is 'a popular game for cyclists'. The mallet has a solid bamboo root cane shaft with a wooden head with a curved face.
Polo enjoyed much popularity amongst British Army officers, especially in India. There were only two firms in England making Polo sticks and so Salter were astute in basing themselves in Aldershot, home of the British army.
In the 1930's was the second creation of the Bicycle Polo Association of Great Britain and a set of new rules were written.
