#26490

Vintage Snaffles WWI Military Print, Wipers.
A good signed Snaffles WWI military print 'Wipers', Snaffles hand coloured lithograph Ca. 1915. The picture shows a wounded soldier standing in front of the burnt Cloth Hall of Ypres with a German 'pickelhaube' impaled on his bayonet. In the bottom margin is a remarque depicting the dead lying in the mud. The print is with the Snaffles blindstamp and is nicely framed in an black modern frame.

Charles 'Snaffles' Johnson Payne (1884 – 1967) was an English painter who specialised in water colours, and who's subject matter was invariably equestrian (racing, hunting, polo and pig sticking), military or a combination of these. Snaffles had a very distinctive style by showing just one person in detail, in addition he added remarques and amusing captions to supplement the pictures and main title.
