Vintage set of miniature Bowls, "Table Bowls"
This set of miniature carpet 'Table' bowls is made of Lignum Vitae and comprises of 8 lawn bowls, 1 jack and chute, all in original red cardboard box. The rules of Table Bowls is printed inside the lid. The game is played in much the same way as normal bowls, with all the bowls having the correct bias as in full sized bowls, but on a table. A billiard or snooker table is ideal. The chute is used to roll the bowl towards the jack. No impetus would have been given to the bowl; it was purely the angle of the chute and how far up the bowl started that determined the bowls final position. Each bowl is 2 inches in diameter.
The origin of Table Bowls is unknown but it is likely that the Victorians invented it as part of the craze for all sorts of parlour games. A whole number of indoor/parlour games were invented, this included miniaturised versions of the popular outdoor games at the time, including bowls and croquet. These games were manufactured by the great games manufacturers of the time such as John Jaques and F. H. Ayres.
