A good first edition copy of 'THE BOOK OF WINTER SPORTS' with a hard cover in original red cloth with gilt title to the front and spine, and a gilt pictorial vignette to the cover depicting a couple ice-skating. The book was edited by Edgar Syres and his wife Madge Syres with an introduction by The Right Hon. The Earl of Lytton and published by Edward Arnold, 41 & 43 Maddox Street, London, 1908. The chapters cover Bandy, Curling, Skating, Ski-ing, Tobogganing, and Valsing on the Ice, supported by many photos and diagrams.

Florence Madeline "Madge" Syers (1881 – 1917) became the first woman to compete at the World Figure Skating Championships in 1902. She won the silver medal in what was previously an all-male event, prompting the International Skating Union to create a separate ladies championship. Madge won the first two events in 1906 and 1907 and at the 1908 Olympics became the champion, the first Olympics to include figure skating. She also won bronze at the same Olympics in the pairs skating with her husband Edgar.
